Sign Language Interpreting, B.A.

The sign language interpreting major provides students with two years of study about the culture and community of Deaf people, including their language, American Sign Language (ASL); followed by two years of study in interpreting. Studies include models of interpreting, development of cognitive skills, translation, consecutive and simultaneous interpreting, types of interpreting jobs, culturally sensitive involvement in the Deaf Community, ethics, professionalism, and skills necessary for taking interpreting certification exams. Graduates of the program possess foundational interpreting skills for entry level work in most community and educational settings and are generally prepared to begin working in the field with a knowledge base that will allow them to pass certification tests.
